What a chamber and hall includes
The name comes from older English usage, where a chamber was a private room and a hall was the main room for receiving people. In Ghanaian housing the two words together describe a unit with one bedroom and one living room.
A chamber and hall is the next step up from a single room. It gives you a separate space to sleep and a space to sit, eat and host visitors. What it does not tell you is whether the bathroom, toilet and kitchen are private. That depends on the building:
- In a compound house, the chamber and hall often shares facilities with other households.
- In newer buildings, the unit usually has its own facilities and is advertised as a chamber and hall self-contain.
On Ghana Property Centre, chamber and hall units are listed under the mini flats pages, because a mini flat is the same layout: one bedroom and one living room.
A chamber and hall is rented under the same rules as any other home. The landlord should register the tenancy with Rent Control and give monthly tenants a rent card, and the law limits the advance that can be demanded.
Differences by region
The phrase is used throughout southern Ghana and is well understood nationally. Some advertisers write "hall and chamber" instead, with the same meaning. In Accra and Kumasi, most chamber and hall units advertised online are self-contained; shared-facility units are more often let locally without an online listing.
What to check
- Whether the bathroom, toilet and kitchen are private or shared.
- The size of each room, from the photos or a visit.
- How electricity and water are metered and paid for.
- Whether there is parking, if you need it.
- The advance being asked and what the written agreement records.
- That the person you pay is the landlord or a licensed agent.
Things to watch for
- A listing that says "chamber and hall" but whose photos show only one room.
- A demand to pay a large advance in cash with no receipt.
- An agent asking for fees from you as well as from the landlord.

Questions

It is a two-room home: a bedroom (the chamber) and a living room (the hall). Facilities may be shared or private.
What is the difference between chamber and hall and chamber and hall self-contain?
A chamber and hall self-contain has its own bathroom, toilet and kitchen. A plain chamber and hall may share them with other tenants.
Is chamber and hall the same as a one-bedroom apartment?
A self-contained chamber and hall is effectively a one-bedroom flat. That is why Ghana Property Centre lists them under mini flats.
How much advance do landlords take for chamber and hall?
The legal limit is shown in the figures on the advance rent page. Many landlords ask for more in practice, which Rent Control says is unlawful.
