Ga West was a part of the Ga District, a former district in the Greater Accra Region, until 2004. It is now one of Accra's municipal districts, with Amasaman as its capital city. It was granted municipal status in 2008 and has since given birth to two additional Ga districts: Ga South Municipal District and Ga North Municipal District. It shares borders with Ga East and Accra Metropolitan Assembly to the east, Akuapim South District to the north, and Ga South Municipal and Ga Central Municipal to the south.

The district's dominant religion is Christianity, with Muslims constituting only about 10% of the population. Ga is the most populous ethnic group, and Ga is the most widely spoken language.

Some scholars believe that the Ga people, who comprise the Indigenes of Ga West, are migrants who moved from North Africa to several West African countries before settling in the Gold Coast, now Ghana. Despite the fact that others have refuted this theory, they all agree that the Ga people have roots in the ancient city of Benin in southern Nigeria.

According to one version, they are related to the Benin people who stayed behind while the others migrated. The symbol of the kings of Akra, as well as the killing of sacrificial animals with stone rather than knives, were incorporated into the ways of the Benin people.
