The location of Ghana's oldest university, the University of Ghana known as Legon, played a role in naming the East Legon area. It is located east of the university, as the name suggests. According to popular belief, the name "Legon" was derived from an animal named Lee who used to live in the mountain, and "gon" means "mountain."
