Accra Area Guide An aerial view of Accra Credit - British Encyclopaedia Britannica

Insects are not the first thing that springs to mind when we think of Africa's most popular city. Accra, the capital of Ghana, is the most commonly mentioned city when speaking of the country. It is because Accra, Ghana's capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name of the city, Accra, comes from the Akan word ‘nkran,’ meaning ants. This is a reference to all of the anthills that can be seen in the surrounding areas around Accra.

Its architecture, which dates to when Accra was the British Gold Coast's capital (and is now Ghana's capital), reflects the city's long and colourful history. Fort James (English), Fort Crevecoeur (Dutch), and Christiansborg Castle all came together to form this new community (Danish).

The city of Accra is the administrative centre of the Greater Accra region. It is divided into 12 municipal districts: Ablekuma Central Municipal District, Ablekuma West Municipal District, Ablekuma North Municipal District, Ada East District, Ada West District, Adenta Municipal District, Ashaiman Municipal District, Ayawaso North Municipal District, Ayawaso Central Municipal District, Ayawaso West Municipal District, Ayawaso East Municipal District, and the Accra Metropolitan District.

Even though many other languages are spoken here, the majority of Accra's residents speak Twi.
